This non-profit foundation’s statute earmarks its allocated funds to the objective of promoting research and teaching of the technical sciences and related disciplines. This includes scientific studies and research projects, such as academic degrees in technical fields.


Projects supported by the TÜV Saarland Foundation often include safety aspects of new technologies and technical concepts, as well as active and passive user protection. This is the case with the project we currently support.

Safety at Work on Electric Vehicles

In the near future, e-mobility will become a key feature of a smart, resource-friendly urban lifestyle. But e-mobility is more than just a new drive concept. Electric mobility follows a completely different understanding of energy and peripheral devices than we are used to from vehicles with combustion engines. This will alter our self-understanding in connection with the theme of mobility. Many services will emerge in connection with electronic drives and, later, with automated driving, for example the provision of intelligent loading infrastructures, including digital invoicing models, or the organisation of widely available e-mobility networks to relieve traffic congestion.

Saarland University has been working on concepts and components for electric vehicles for some time – partly in collaboration with the Saarland University of Applied Sciences (htw saar), especially the Institute of Engineering Design and the Laboratory of Actuation Technology. The researchers and engineers ask specific questions about safety requirements, as the drive systems run in the high-voltage range. Therefore, electro-mobility components and systems still pose a technical safety risk throughout their product lifecycles – from development through to testing, production and commissioning, to their use and upkeep. One example is: Safety devices must be integrated in systems to ensure that the voltage is only active when the ignition is switched on, and that the circuit is interrupted immediately in the event of a fault.

Preparing for a Secure E-mobile Future

The TÜV Saarland Foundation is currently funding this project for two years, within the project “Safety at Work on Electric Vehicles”. Due to the safety requirements, the Departments’ research projects, as well as student work and their projects, quickly reach their limits. For example, high voltages are regularly reached, and cannot be exceeded using the existing equipment and the current levels of training. The TÜV Saarland Foundation supports the safety-related upgrade of the workshops to ensure that the safety-related aspects of electric drives do not restrict academic work, and to advance research in this future-oriented field. The objective of the funded research is to protect developers and users from the harmful effects of electro-mobility components and systems.
